Thank you for your interest in the D. Augustus Straker Bar Association’s Annual Trailblazers Awards Dinner. The bar association is named after David Augustus Straker, who was the first African American to appear before the Michigan Supreme Court. The mission of the bar association is to increase minority representation in the legal profession, support and encourage legal practice opportunities for minorities, and facilitate equal justice for all citizens.
In furtherance of this mission and the bar association’s namesake, the awards dinner is the association's marquee event and is used to honor outstanding individuals who are trailblazers in the legal community. The awards dinner is also used to award the A. Kay Stanfield Spinks Law Student Scholarship to law students dedicated to public service in Michigan, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Drum Major For Justice Advocacy Competition scholarship to high school juniors and seniors. More information on both of these awards can be found at the links above.
