D. AUGUSTUS STRAKER BAR ASSOCIAION STANDS AGAINST INSTITUTIONALIZED RACISM

2020-2021 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Founded in 1990, The D. Augustus Straker Bar Association’s membership includes a racially diverse coalition of lawyers, judges, in-house counsel and other legal professionals. The mission of the D. Augustus Straker Bar Association was, and continues to be, to increase minority representation in the legal profession, support and encourage legal practice opportunities for minorities, and facilitate equal justice for all citizens.  For the past 30 years, this organization has provided support, fellowship and mentorship for African American attorneys, students, and community members.

It is an honor and privilege that I serve as President of this organization.   I take pride in its illustrious history, and I am honored to join such an esteemed group of leaders. With that said, it is no secret that we live in difficult times.  2020 started with a pandemic that changed the way we live. Black and brown people, who already consistently face inequities, are dying from COVID-19 at disproportionate rates across America. In addition, we continue to witness racial injustices across the country that have caused conflict, pain and protests. With this in mind, I, along with officers from seven other affinity bar associations in Michigan, created the “Black Lawyers Social Justice Coalition,” to effect social change by providing legal services, legislative advocacy, community outreach and education in our communities.  For our part, Straker will continue its focus on, among other things, progressive political advocacy, election protection and expungement efforts.   We will also engage in meaningful mentorship opportunities with fellow lawyers, law students and local school-aged students.

As we embark upon increasingly uncertain times, we will do so with a sense of clarity and purpose. We must remain steadfast in our goals of continued growth and expansion. It is with that in mind that I am committed to working diligently to further our goals and help manifest our vision. On behalf of the Executive Board, I would like to thank each of you for the opportunity to serve, and for your continued commitment and support of our organization.

At Your Service,

Carlton D. Watson
